The AlUla World Archaeology Summit is a global platform promoting archaeology and cultural heritage to wider audiences, and inspiring people to co-create visionary, heritage-based solutions to contemporary problems across sectors. This new gathering of leaders from academia, government, non-government organizations, industry, and young people representing the next generation of archaeologists will not only enrich the archaeological community and help protect our shared history but also open up to a larger reflection of what and how archaeology, and more broadly cultural heritage, can contribute to transformational changes in society. Together, we will explore the value of understanding the past, of using that knowledge to inform the present, as we build a resilient future.

  • Identity: Exploring the intricate relationship we have with our heritage and connection to the past, and how archaeology shapes our personal and shared identities in an increasingly globalized world.
  • Ruinscapes: Exploring archaeological paradoxes, practices, and dilemmas.
  • Resilience: Exploring wisdom of the past that has much to teach us, and highlighting challenges that need to be overcome.
  • Accessibility: Exploring the past as a universal right by traversing topics of diversity, disability, and financial access to heritage.

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) was established by royal decree in July 2017 to preserve and develop AlUla, a region of outstanding natural and cultural significance in north-west Saudi Arabia. RCU’s long-term plan outlines a responsible, sustainable, and sensitive approach to urban and economic development that preserves the area’s natural and historic heritage while establishing AlUla as a desirable location to live, work, and visit. This encompasses a broad range of initiatives across archaeology, tourism, culture, education, and the arts, reflecting a commitment to meeting the economic diversification, local community empowerment, and heritage preservation priorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 programme.

RCU is transforming AlUla county into a leading destination for heritage, culture, art and nature . AlUla is home to iconic Nabataean city of Hegra, which became the first UNESCO World Heritage site in Saudi Arabia in 2008. With protection of AlUla’s exceptional cultural, and natural heritage, and its archaeological value at the core of RCU’s vision, AlUla will continue developing into an inspiring destination, welcoming local and international visitors from across the globe.

Infrastructure and facilities are being created for visitors to experience the world-class cultural and natural heritage found at the crossroads of civilisations in AlUla, the world’s largest living museum. RCU’s comprehensive regeneration of AlUla will also have a positive economic impact on a regional scale, enhancing the opportunities for long- term prosperity. New education, training and employment opportunities will enrich the lives of local communities and support this economic growth.

Conserving AlUla’s rich heritage is at the core of RCU’s mission. RCU employs leading Saudi and international experts in the fields of archaeology and heritage conservation, and the organization is working with global partners from diverse fields that share its commitment to securing AlUla’s future. RCU’s approach to comprehensive regeneration ensures AlUla’s ongoing development as an international cultural destination, while uplifting the region’s economy and preserving its heritage and natural beauty.
