CLOSING REMARKS DAY 01

The inaugural AlUla World Archaeology Summit will convene innovators from archaeology and other disciplines to foster cross-cultural and interdisciplinary discussions. Together, we will explore the value of understanding the past, of using that knowledge to inform the present, and to build a resilient future.

It is a global platform promoting archaeology and cultural heritage to wider audiences, and inspiring people to co-create visionary, heritage-based solutions to contemporary problems across sectors.

Identity Panel - The Shape of Us: Archaeology, Identity and Culture

In the modern world, in which many conventional definitions are obsolete, how can archaeology challenge and expand identities of self, of family, of communities, of nations? How can archaeology collaborate with other disciplines to do so? The session explores the various ways in which archaeology can be instrumental in shaping identities.

Identity Panel - Archaeology Weaves an Interconnected World

This session explores the ways in which different groups and cultures of the ancient world were interconnected and influenced each other by looking at routes of travel, the spread of ideas and knowledge, and even tracing genetic connections across the ancient world to reveal how human pasts and presents are bound together.

Identity In Conversation - Exploring Archaeology of Modernity and Identity Building

The recent past holds valuable insights into our evolving cultural identity. Walking through some case studies of the archaeology and heritage of modern sites, the session aims to uncover the ways in which nostalgia has functioned as a potent tool for building and reinforcing identities, empowering communities to reclaim and preserve their unique cultural narratives. Through this exploration, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of how the recent past intertwines with our collective memory, fostering a sense of belonging and pride.

Informal Discussions - Knowledge Exchange

Sessions consisting of facilitated discussions among attendees and speakers. All participants will be pre-assigned to breakouts to ensure an even distribution of perspectives and experiences. Each session will be led by a facilitator who will guide the conversation and ensure that no single participant monopolizes the discussion.

Ruinscapes Panel - Cross-pollination: How Can Archaeology Support Interdisciplinary Innovation?

What do non-archaeologists suggest archaeologists prioritize, solve, or change within their practice? How can non-archaeologists contribute to the wider archaeological discourse? What areas should archaeologists prioritize for improvement, what challenges should they address, and what aspects of their practice could benefit from change? This discussion also delves into how non-archaeologists can actively contribute to the broader archaeological discourse. It will explore the various ways non-archaeologists can engage, share knowledge, and actively participate in archaeological research, thus creating a more inclusive and comprehensive understanding of our collective human history and the communities we engage in.

Resilience Panel - Lost & Found: Unearthing Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges

From sustainable practices employed by ancient civilizations to ingenious problem-solving techniques, the session will highlight how heritage practices can assist in navigating modern issues such as climate change, urban planning, agriculture, waste management, and more. Join our panel of experts as we embark on a journey to discover the hidden potential of ancient practices and unlock a new realm of possibilities for building a sustainable future.

Resilience Panel - Protecting the Past for the Future

Delving into the power of legal frameworks and policies, this session will examine how they can provide a robust foundation for conserving both tangible and intangible heritage. The session will also accentuate the significance of engaging local communities and stakeholders in the process to have a community-based approach in the wider scheme of heritage management

Resilience Panel - The Dawn of a New Age for Archaeology?

This session will highlight the challenges facing archaeology today, including long-term employment in the field and lack of investment from the private sector, as well as explore possible solutions and a positive vision for the future of the discipline.

This session weighs the pros and cons of digital archaeology, particularly that while digital technology has the potential to democratize access to archaeological knowledge, it also carries the risk of oversimplifying and commodifying complex cultures as well as making information accessible for looters.

Accessibility Panel - Digging in Together: The Future of Inclusive Archaeology

Opportunities in cultural heritage fields should be open to all. How can technology, engagement, resources, etc., be employed to enable greater representation in the field of archaeology and heritage. In what ways can Archaeologist and heritage practitioners make opportunities and resources for diverse populations to actively engage and potentially have opportunities in the field of heritage?

Accessibility In Conversation - Saving Archaeology One TikTok at a Time

This session explores the use of popular culture and branding to make archaeology more accessible and appealing to a wider audience, for example discussions of the role of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, social media platforms, as well as museums and news outlets, in amplifying archaeological discoveries and history by making them more accessible to the public in meaningful dialogue.
